Richard Lee Lanning

Richard Lee Lanning, 71, of Hurricane went to his heavenly home on June 9, 2024, after a brief illness. A 1970 graduate of Hurricane High School, he joined the Army in 1971.  He proudly fought for his country in Vietnam with the 192nd Assault Helicopter Company – returned home 1973. A member of the Carpenters Local 439, he retired from G & G Construction in 2012 after 28 years of service to enjoy life with his loving wife Kelley.

Richard was the son of the late Elmer and Marjorie Lanning and step-mother Mayola Lanning.

He is survived by his wife, Kelley Lanning; children, Dustin (Angela) Lanning, Darin Lanning, and Danielle Lanning, Shane (Angela) Alexander and Derek (Nichi) Alexander; sister, Linda McCallister and children; grandchildren, Megan (Derek) Stanley, Adi (Brandon) Shafer, Gwyneth Lanning, Sydne Alexander, Jaxin Alexander, Paula Grace Alexander, Zachary Lanning, Nathan Alexander; and great grandson Hunter Stanley.

Richard enjoyed walking with Kelley on the beach and around their neighborhood, a good western movie, and laughing with his family and friends. His grandchildren always knew that they could find him on the sidelines cheering them on in whatever they chose to do. He will also be missed by the squirrels, birds and the occasional racoon that he enjoyed feeding in his back yard.

Richard was a devoted member of the Pine Grove Church of Christ. He loved to fellowship with his brothers and sisters in Christ, always willing to do whatever the Church needed.

The family would like to thank Hospice Care of WV and Danielle Lanning for allowing Richard to rest comfortably in his home during his final days.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. til Noon on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 with a short service at noon.  A private Burial for family with Military Honors at Donel C Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.
