Phil R. Hyre, 89, of Hurricane, WV, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2018, at St. Mary’s Medical Center after suffering a stroke Wednesday night.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Lena Hyre; brothers, Burt Hyre, Bill Hyre and Roy Hyre; sister, Oneta Hyre and two infant grandsons.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Karen Hyre; daughters, Sheila (Phil) Wheeler of Powell, OH, Theresa (Larry) Nelson of St. Albans, Darlena (Gary) Surbaugh of Cross Lanes, Cynthia Jones of Sellersburg, IN and Susan (Jeremy) Mayo, Springfield, OH; 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and his special dog, Skeeter. Also surviving him is his brother, Frank Hyre of Rock Cave and two sisters, Susie Bender of Rock Cave and Patty Booth of Raceland, KY.
Phil was a man of many talents and interests. He had been a bowler, an archer, avid hunter, a fisherman, Christmas tree grower, beekeeper, woodworker, gardener, quilter and antique automobile owner. He and Karen spent many years having fun with their model T and friends in the Model T Club.
Phil was a retiree of Union Carbide, having worked in the lab on the island for 36 years. He had many friends and up until 2 years ago was very active in all of his various activities.
He was longtime member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church and its Loyal Pioneers Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 1, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church in Hurricane with Rev. Jeremy Daniels officiating. Friends and family may call two hours prior to service at the church.
