Margaritte Hulley Obituary

Margaritte Kathryn Taylor Hulley, 104 years young, went to Heaven on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, surrounded by loving family and friends. Margaritte was born on Sunday, February 22, 1920, in Hurricane, West Virginia, daughter of Ada Dell Tanner Taylor and Brooklyn Dalton Taylor. Margaritte graduated from Hurricane High School in 1938, then went into nurse’s training at Huntington Memorial Hospital, in Huntington, WV., earning her Registered Nurse degree and internship in Charleston General Hospital, and in Philadelphia, Pa.  Margaritte married Burl Newman of Lavalette, WV. on December 1, 1940. Their life together brought them 4 children she “loved more than anything in this whole wide world”: born in 1943 Dennis Edward Newman, then Vivian Sue Newman, and in 1947 Steven Lyn Newman, and in 1950 Micky Anne Newman. They divorced in 1954.  Margaritte cared for polio patients at Morris Memorial Hospital in Milton, WV, during the polio crisis in 1952-1955, then, she transferred to the Bay Pines Veterans Admin. Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she also made her home permanent until today. She was the Chief Nurse at the Bay Pines VA Hospital.  Margaritte was married to Arthur W. Hulley on December 1, 1959, until his death in 1983.  She especially loved studying Bible and writing booklets of New Testament gospels to share with family and church members. At Christian Retreat in Bradenton, Florida, she also earned a ministry certificate. She was also a traveler, loved sewing, raising gardens, and most of all her animals and dog companions she had all through her life.  Margaritte became a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, and has many friends there.  Remaining to cherish her memory are her friends, and her daughter, “Suzy” Newman Atkinson, and grandson Brian Atkinson with wife Katie, with great granddaughter Ruby Kate Atkinson, and granddaughter Brooke Atkinson, plus granddaughter Andrea Newman Pullen with 2 great grandchildren, Brandi Fry and Hayden Straight, and 6 great- great grandchildren. She has many dear nieces and nephews whom she considers has her own, and they lovingly refer to her as “Aunt Pice”.  Preceding Margaritte in death are her children, Dennis Newman, Steven Newman, and Micky Anne Newman, also her granddaughter, Jill Clark; her father, Brooklyn D. Taylor and mother, Ada Dell Taylor; her brothers, Jay Douglas Taylor and Dalton Taylor; her sisters, Avalee Jean Taylor Potts, and Dorothy Taylor Dick, and Melba “Bobbie” LaFon; husband Arthur Hulley; Father of her children Burl Newman; son-in-law Bruce Atkinson; her great niece Marsha Dell Wisnewski; and best friend Polly Land in Florida. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at Allen Funeral Home, in Hurricane, WV. at 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.  There will be an Order of the Eastern Star Ceremony at 11:00 a.m. Following the visitation, there will be a graveside ceremony at 12:00 p.m. at Valley View Memorial Park in Hurricane, WV.
