Leonard Dow Morrison of Hurricane, West Virginia passed away peacefully at the
Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, West Virginia. He recently celebrated
his 90th birthday surrounded by family and friends.
Leonard was born in Logan, West Virginia in1935 to Luther and Mildred Chambers Morrison who
preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by former wife Nancy Morrison,
sisters Renatha Woodard and Dorothy Rodriguez, brothers Marvin, Grady, Lewis, and
Bobby. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Emma Lee Erwin Morrison, son Gregory
(Melissa) of Luray, VA, daughters Kimberli Erwin Matteson (Dr. Tom) of Luray, VA, Kristi Erwin
Dunlap (Tim) of Huntington, WV, grandchildren Dr. Logan Morrison (Abigail) and Alison
Morrison of Luray, VA, Liam Matteson of Luray, VA, Megan Keplinger (Jed) of Harrisonburg,
VA, and Reese Dunlap of Huntington, WV, great granddaughter Lauren Keplinger of
Harrisonburg, VA, sisters-in-law Marilyn Morrison of Milton, WV, and Jerrie Hussell of
Charleston, WV, and many nieces and nephews.
Leonard was a graduate of Logan High School, where he played football, basketball, and
baseball. He attended Arlington College in Riverside, California, where he sang Tenor in a
quartet and played basketball. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Riverside.
During his time in Springfield, Missouri he was employed by Empire Gas. He eventually
made his way back to West Virginia where he was employed as an account executive for
Interstate Supply. He coached Little League Baseball in Milton with a dear friend of over 50
years, Don Steele. Leonard was a faithful Marshall fan for all sports. He loved cheering on
the HERD at home and away games. On occasion he made trips to cheer on the
Mountaineers in Morgantown and various bowl games. He was a charter member of The
Church in the Valley in Milton, where he served as a trustee and member of the choir for 30
years. Leonard enjoyed tailgating, grilling, hosting cook outs and pool parties, making chili
and taking care of his pool and lawn. He had a very special love for his grandchildren. He
loved to travel and took many school trips with his wife (Spanish teacher) to many
countries. He also took several mission trips to the Dominican Republic where he painted
and did repairs for many churches and schools.
The family will receive friends at the Allen Funeral Home in Hurricane WV from 6-8 pm
Thursday, December 4th. A celebration of life will be held on December 5th at The Church in
The Valley at 2pm. Visitation one hour before the service. Burial will follow in Valley View Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank all those that helped with Leonard’s care this past year.
