Helen Smith 84, of Hurricane went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Elmcroft of Teays Valley. Helen loved to travel, work, and be with family. Helen always loved life and lived each day to the fullest. When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s/Dementia, she refused to let it define her. Every day was a new day, with new challenges that she courageously faced. Because of Helen’s great love for people, she never met a stranger and that never changed. At Elmcroft in the Memory Care unit where she lived, you could always find her helping the other residents with day to day tasks, telling her stories to anyone who would listen, and helping the staff with whatever she could. She was that person who made a bad day better just by being her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Everett Smith, parents, brothers, and sisters. She is survived by her children Ron (Michelle), Stan (Ida), Tony (Jaeda), and Pam (Tony), 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, sister Shirley Bush (Junior) of Dayton, Ohio, many nieces, nephews, and life long friends. She is also survived by her adopted friends at Elmcroft that became family.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Hurricane First Church of the Nazarene (358 US Rt. 60 Hurricane). Burial to follow at Valley View Cemetery and Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM prior to service.
Thank you to the Memory Care staff, nurses, and any other staff member at Elmcroft who loved Helen…”YOU” were Amazing!!! We appreciate you and are forever grateful to each of you for the love and care you provided for her. You are Heroes!!!
A special thank you to Kylie Williamson for always going the extra mile to take care of not only Helen, but every resident in the Memory Care unit and their families. Helen loved her like one of her own children and argued with her like they were sisters. Kylie has become family to us and we love her!
