It is with a sad and heavy heart that we announce the passing of Harold Eugene Hamby “POPS” at the age of 83. He entered Heaven on August 29, 2023 after a brief stay at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, WV.
He was born on July 2, 1940 to Claude and Juanita Hamby in Acme, WV. He had a happy childhood growing up in rural West Virginia and was proud of his heritage and the county he lived in and later served. Upon graduating from East Bank High School he entered the United States Army where he received an Honorable Discharge in 1961. Shortly after serving he began his career in the airlines industry at Charleston’s Yeager Airport working for United Airlines and eventually retiring as a Customer Service Manager with Comair.
He lived most of his life in the town of Hurricane, WV, where he raised his family. He was a supportive and loving father, grandfather and friend to many. He was an avid sports fan, especially when it came to football and golf, which he previously loved playing.
He battled many health issues later in life, though you would never know it because he always had an amazing smile, warm heart and positive outlook on life. He was baptized in 2006 and had faith in GOD and belief in the Bible, which he read often.
He is survived by his former wife Ginny Hamby who is the mother of his devoted son Bryan Hamby and his faithful daughter Kelli Hamby Ross. He was so proud of her two sons “His Grandsons” Chase Ross and Blake Ross, who brought so much joy to his life. His sister Beverly Lanhamand her husband and his long time friend, Larry Lanham. His sister’s nieces, Lori Henshey, Angie Massey, Leslie Lanham, Wendy Wilson and Brittany Cochran. His niece and nephews through marriage, Skip Messenger, Chris Messinger, Steve Messinger, Heather Messinger Bodak and Mark Harvey, as well as extended family members and many friends.
He was preceded in death by Claude Hamby (Father) Juanita Farmer Hamby (Mother) and Sisters Kay Graham and Dawn Richardson-White.
To honor his wishes, there will be no funeral service. We invite everyone to celebrate Harold’s memory in their ownway and to keep him in your hearts forever. After cremation there will be a Memorial Celebration planned at future date.
