Donnie R. Nelson

Donnie R. Nelson peacefully went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2026, after a long illness. Born on November 29, 1948, in Hurricane, WV, Donnie graduated from Hurricane High School in 1966 and dedicated 22 years of service to the U.S. Navy. After his military career, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a devoted member of the First Church of God in Hurricane. He found joy in woodworking and gardening, passions that reflected his love for creating and nurturing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Martha Nelson, and his brothers Lloyd (Sandy) Nelson and Steven (Karen) Nelson.

Donnie is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Janet L Nelson; his brothers Kelly Gene Nelson of Hurricane, WV, Paul (Debbie) Nelson of Crystal River, FL, and Ronnie (Tami) Nelson of St. Augustine, FL. He is also remembered by his sisters-in-law Susan (Dave) Hunsinger of Tallahassee, FL, Pat (Bob) Kilburn of New Johnsonville, TN; brothers-in-law Butch Mesick of Keystone Heights, FL, and Paul Mesick of Arden, NC; many nieces and nephews; and two adopted granddaughters, Jayme Green of Huntington, WV, and Abby Tucker of Buffalo, WV.

Donnie will be remembered as a loving husband, uncle, and papaw.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Kanawha Hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Allen Funeral Home, with Pastor Harold Richards officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Milton, WV. Friends may visit from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at Allen Funeral Home.
