Carla Ann Lynch (October 1, 1958 – August 21, 2025) was a remarkable woman whose life touched the hearts of many. Born and raised in the quaint, wooded neighborhood of McLean Addition on Phillips Street in Beckley, West Virginia, Carla was the youngest daughter of Peggy and Chester (Buddy) Lynch Jr. She shared a deep bond with her older sister, Erin Lynch, with whom she remained close until the end. Carla often reminisced about family trips to Nags Head Beach in North Carolina, memories that brought her immense joy along with other memories like exploring the woods behind the family home where she’d also read and write, and also spending time with her life long friend Kandy or Saturdays spent watching WVU football which she was a lifelong fan of. The family home, built by Carla’s parents, had a beautiful garden in the backyard which Carla loved to care for even long after her parents’ deaths. After graduating highschool, Carla would attend WVU Tech, where she would meet and marry Joseph Carte, together they raised four children: Ben, Mandi, Grace, and Katy while earning her Master’s degree(plus 45) in library science and would later give birth to her youngest son Andrew. Carla dedicated her career to education, serving as a K-12 librarian, most notably at Chesapeake Elementary School in Chesapeake, West Virginia. Some of her most treasured moments were spent there with Andrew, who accompanied her to school. Their hour-long car rides between Beckley and Chesapeake, filled with music from artists like James Taylor and the Allman Brothers(which were favorites from her youth), became a cherished ritual that strengthened their bond. A devout Catholic, Carla’s faith was unwavering, even through health challenges and personal struggles. She was a committed member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Beckley, where she found solace and strength. In 2019, health issues prompted her retirement, and she relocated to Hurricane, West Virginia, to live with help from her youngest son Andrew. There, she remained a loving presence, supporting her daughters Grace and Katy as they raised their own children as well.
Finally, Carla passed away peacefully in hospital care on Thursday, August 21, 2025. She is survived by her five children—Ben, Mandi, Grace, Katy, and Andrew—and her sister, Erin.
Carla was a woman of great intelligence, compassion, and empathy, qualities that earned her the admiration and respect of all who knew her. Her kindness was boundless, particularly toward her family and children, leaving an indelible mark on their lives.
In the words of her son, Andrew: “Mom was the kindest soul I’ve ever met, almost too kind if that’s possible. I hope she is reading this and knows that she will always be loved and held deeply in all of our hearts and was the best mother we could’ve ever asked for”
