Stephen A. Gillispie

Stephen Allen Gillispie, 77, of Teays Valley, passed away on March 13, 2019 at Broadmore Assisted Living.  He was born in Charleston, WV on February 23, 1942, to Curtis and Garnett Gillispie.

Steve graduated from St. Albans High School and attended West Virginia State College.  He served four years in the US Air Force and then began his career with C&P Telephone (later Bell Atlantic) until his retirement from Verizon.  Steve was a long-time member of Sleepy Hollow Golf Club where he achieved three holes-in-one – quite an accomplishment!  He became interested in amateur radio and spent many hours speaking to people around the world.  He was honored as a life member of the American Radio Relay League and was recognized by his call sign K8LZ.  He enjoyed the outdoors and took great pride in his lawn and flowers.  He was an avid bird-watcher and was recognized for spotting a very rare bird near Winfield.  In his later years, Steve spent a great deal of time fishing whenever possible.

Steve is survived by his wife Sharon, stepdaughters Brigitte Jenkins, Heidi Ryder (Norman), sisters Valerie Wade (Jeff), Tammy Shingleton (Dwain), brothers Richard (Marie), and Kevin (Lee Ann), five step-grandchildren, six step-great grandchildren, 4 nieces, and 2 nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Broadmore Assisted Living and Hospice for their excellent care and support. We would also like to thank Allen Funeral Home for their assistance and kindness during this time.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, April 27th at 11:00 am at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane with Pastor Ronald McClung officiating.  In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations be made to Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd., Charleston, WV  25387.
