Staff Sergeant Robert Timothy Cunningham, 27, of Hurricane, WV, died suddenly on July 12, 2018. He was born December 27, 1990. He was the son of Teresa Souther Cunningham of Culloden, WV and Mark (Sharon) Cunningham of Washington, WV.
Rob is a 2009 graduate of Hurricane High School. He enlisted into the West Virginia National Guard in 2010 and was pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business while serving his state and country. Rob has been honored for his outstanding efforts, by earning the 2014 West Virginia and Region II Soldier of the Year awards and received the National Soldier of the Year bronze medal. In 2015, Rob earned the State, Regional and National Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year award and competed admirably in the All Army Best Warrior Challenge. Rob's personal highest honor was attending the Sapper Leaders Course earning the coveted SAPPER Tab in 2016.
Rob credited the West Virginia National Guard with giving him the chance to be the best man he could be and give him immeasurable opportunities
Rob was a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane, WV.
Along with his parents, Rob is survived by his parental grandparents, James and Dana Cunningham of Washington, WV; his siblings, Mary Cunningham (Tyler McGrew) of Charleston, WV, Wesley Cunningham of Boise, Idaho, Bobbie McMillian of Etna, Ohio, Jamie Caldwell of Coolville, Ohio and Nikki Caldwell of Huntington, WV. He is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 19, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Hurricane with Chaplain Bennett officiating. Friends and family may call two hours prior to memorial service.
