Mary Clare Moses, 82, of Hurricane, WV passed away September 16th, 2017.   She was born March 8, 1935, in Wheeling, WV, to the late Maron and Mary Wakim Moses.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her baby sister Margaret Rose and a niece, Tara Moses of Phoenix, AZ.  Surviving sisters include Dr. Marion Moses of San Francisco, CA, Martha Moses of Summerville, SC,  Marcella Miller of Hughson, CA, and Marlene Moses of Nitro, WV.  Surviving brothers include Maron Moses (Betty) of San Rafael, CA, and Martin Moses (Norma) of Nitro, WV.  Additionally she is survived by nieces Jennifer Moses of Santa Monica, CA, Rachael Moses of Charleston, WV, Paula Peterson (Jim) of Modesto, CA, Lisa Miller of Columbus, OH, and a nephew Brendan Moses of Phoenix, AZ.

 

Mary Clare was a retired educator whose career spanned 47 years.  She was a graduate of St. Anthony’s Grade School in Charleston and a 1954 graduate of Charleston Catholic High School.  She earned a Bachelor of Science from Duquesne University along with a Masters in School Administration and Adult Education from Marshall University.  Her career included thirteen years with the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.  Various components of her career in adult education include teaching for the West Virginia Department of Mental Health, being the county coordinator for the West Virginia Adult Basic Education program and being Director of Education at the Anthony Correctional Center.  She also served as principal at St. Francis of Assisi School in St. Albans and St. Francis Xavier School in Moundsville, WV.   She was awarded the National Teacher of Reading Award (1973) and served two terms as state President of the West Virginia Adult Education Association.  

Mary Clare was a member of the Catholic Church of the Ascension in Hurricane and enjoyed knitting and crocheting, playing the organ and cooking.  She was also a member of the Board of Directors for Putnam Aging, West Virginia Adult Education Association and the Secular Franciscan Order.

 

Mary Clare wishes to give special thanks to the numerous medical specialists, service personnel from the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority, Fresenius Medical Care personnel and Genesis HealthCare personnel for her superb medical and transportation needs.

 

Visitation will be held at Allen Funeral Home Hurricane, WV on Tuesday September 19th from 5pm  to 8pm.   Rev. Harry N. Cramer will lead the Scriptural Vigil Service at 7:30pm.  

 

 Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday September 20th at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, 905 Hickory Mill Road, Hurricane, WV, with Rev. Harry N. Cramer, Rev. Robert Park,  Rev. James O’Conner, and Rev. Patrick McDonough officiating.  Final internment will be at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, WV.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetic Association or the Imogene Dolin Jones Hospice House  of Huntington.
