Raymond Peak, 90, of Hurricane, WV, passed away May 11, 2019, following an accident. Mr. Peak was the long-time mayor of Hurricane, WV, serving the city for 44 years before his retirement in 2007. Prior to being elected Mayor in 1957, he was elected the town Recorder for two terms.
Mayor Peak taught at Hurricane High School where he met the love of his life and future wife, Gloria (Sowards). He also taught at Hannon High School (Mason County, WV) where he started the band, then Winfield High School, where was also an award winning band director, and then returned to Hurricane High School, where he coached the girls’ basketball team to the state tournament several years, and finished his teaching career in the late 1989.
Mayor Peak’s other civic accomplishments include: representing Putnam and Mason counties in the House of Delegates (1973-1977); being one of the founders of the Putnam School Employees Federal Credit Union; being President of the West Virginia Municipal League (2002-2003); and Chairman of the West Virginia Regional Intergovernmental Counsel (1998-2000).
Mayor Peak was born in Dekota, WV, the son of George T. Peak, Sr. and Rose Ethel (Slater) Peak. He was proceeded in death by his parents and by his wife, Gloria, also by 4 brothers and their spouses: Henry (Mary); George Thomas, Jr. (Willene); Archie (Rita “Micky”) and Meril (Jackie, Bonnie), and a sister Emma. He is survived by his children Veneta (Gary) Eggleton, Douglas Peak and Jane E. Peak; grandchildren Chris (Ashley) and Carrie Eggleton; Kristina (Andrew) Keith , Kimberly (Nickie) Algee, Douglas “Dougie” (Anna) Peak; and greatgrandchildren Matthew, Jenna, Alex, Armani, Kevin (“Braden”), Jayden, Gloria and Eron.
Funeral service will be 2:00 Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Valley Park Conference Center, Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 til 8 at Allen Funeral Home on Saturday, May 18, 2019 and from 1 – 2 on Sunday at the Valley Park prior to the service.
